This video was produced as part of the audiovisual writing and essay residency for creative couples, sponsored by the Recoleta Cultural Center and the Biennial of Moving Image, led by the Tres de Febrero University.
In 2020, the Biennial of Moving Images (BIM) in Buenos Aires had to reinvent itself in a digital format due to the pandemic. Under the theme of “mirarnos a los ojos (volver a)” [“looking at each other in the eyes (again)”], the biennial invited artists to produce works during the eight months of lockdown in Buenos Aires. This invitation to look at each other in the eyes refers to the missed gazes during long telematic meetings, and we sought to explore other senses. In collaboration with the Foundation of Lygia Clark, a Brazilian master of the sensory, we recreated one of her works that highlights the possibility of looking at each other in the eyes in an intimate proximity. We used crystals, magnifying glasses, and beams of light to generate correspondences between analogue optical systems, creating a playful and refractive experience that escapes the specular gaze we were accustomed to.
