Processual and collective art – socio-economic & cultural integration (2017-2020)

Between 2017 and 2019, my day job evolved into a platform for collective and community development, not necessarily focused on artworks. In 2017, I joined the cultural department of the Instituto de Vivienda de la Ciudad (IVC), the organization responsible for revitalizing the “villas de emergencia” (shantytowns) in the city of Buenos Aires. Three of these settlements, namely Playón Chacarita, Rodrigo Bueno, and Villa 20, were slated to host the construction of cultural centers, and I was entrusted with the task of creating spaces for artistic and professional training as part of a broader initiative encompassing socio-economic, cultural, and ecological integration.

In this capacity, I took on the role of a curator, nurturing the interests of the local residents, and facilitating various art workshops. Through these workshops, each participant acquired valuable skills and fostered a sense of community with other people and artists. My responsibilities involved bridging the gap between artists and community members, promoting artistic skills acquisition, exploring process-oriented art and life-changing experiences, fostering social integration, and cultivating a sense of shared artistry.

At Rodrigo Bueno, in collaboration with contemporary artist Romina Orazi, we established a community garden, providing training to 15 gardeners and promoting economic self-sufficiency for some families. Over time, this garden, combined with years of training, led to the creation of Vivera Orgánica, one of the few places in the city where you can purchase native plants. They also began producing homemade compost and cultivating vegetable gardens.

At Playón Chacarita, alongside Daniela Seggiaro and Julián D’angiolillo, both artists and filmmakers, we introduced an audiovisual training workshop centered around a TV channel we co-created with the children, which they named “Oasis TV.” This program enabled kids to acquire various audiovisual skills, giving them the opportunity to interview different community members and visiting political figures.

In Villa 20, working with Gabriel Baggio and Nahuel Martinez, we organized contemporary ceramic workshops, a project in which local families actively participated. They learned how to design new practical applications and rekindled their ancestral knowledge of diverse soil types from Bolivia, Peru, and Paraguay, contributing significantly to Vivera Orgánica’s efforts to sell native plants with their unique and dedicated plant pots.

Regrettably, the cultural department of the IVC closed its doors in December 2019, and the 2020 lockdown left us with no further opportunities to continue our collaborative efforts.

Fotografía en Argentina 1840-2010. Assistant curator. Curator: Valeria González. Galería Arte x Arte, Fundación Luz y Alfonso Castillo, 2011-2012.

Alongside artist researcher Valeria González, we conducted various research projects on the introduction and utilization of photography in the Argentinean context. This investigation delved into how the beginnings of modern institutions intertwined with documentary photography, leading artists to embrace this medium quite early on.

This contemporary exhibition aimed to initiate a dialogue between “documents,” archives, modern and contemporary creations all expressed through the photographic medium. Our objective was always to examine the relationship between photography and the socio-economic representational history of the country.

My role involved assisting in the process by engaging in photography studies, conducting interviews with artists, visiting their workshops, and conducting research in both national archives and private and public collections.

Como el amor, 20 años de la galería del Centro Cultural Ricardo Rojas, Assistant Curator and Producer, 2009.

Working alongside artist researchers and curators who specialize in post-dictatorship art in Buenos Aires during the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, Maximo Jacoby and Valeria Gonzalez, I assumed the role of a curatorial assistant for both the book and the exhibition. I conducted extensive field research, involving interactions with artists, private and public collections, and historical underground artist-run spaces, dedicating an entire year to this endeavor.
